In his own words: The most pressing issue in the campaign is "the need to prepare Ontario for the coming recession that no one else is even appears to be aware of. This recession will be caused by two factors. The irresponsible behaviour of the U.S. administration in the past five years in creating a huge deficit over the war in Iraq that is depressing the U.S. dollar which will affect all our exports and who helped to encourage the housing bubble that will leave hundreds of thousands -- if not millions -- of Americans destitute. The fallout from that will be a huge drop in demand for lumber products what will be devastating to Northern Ontario, coupled with a drop in demand for our other manufactured goods, which is already having an effect, viz, the layoffs at the Oshawa GM plant, increased dollar value, and slowdown.
"The second problem is peak oil. Global production has dropped by a million barrels per day since June 2006. There have been new drilling, upgraded technology, and exploration, but all the oilfields brought online in the past year have not compensated for the decline. At the same time, world demand has increased beyond world production, which has driven the price of gasoline up. The last time we faced this problem was in the 1970s and the resultant economic disruption to our industrial production system that is built on plentiful cheap energy was devastating. A lot of people were forced to sell their homes in the early 1980s. The disruption to oil production caused by the first Gulf War triggered a second recession, which also hurt Ontario. The last two major recessions, oil started to flow freely again, but this time, it will never be as available as it once was and we have no effective way to replace it.
"I am in the Green Party because I care about this planet and I care about everyone on it. I care about the long-term future of this city and this province. We need some serious discussion of how to go about changing this society into a sustainable one. We must balance the needs of people, nature, and business. To do that, we need to build a new economy, one where short-term economic interests are in accord with the long-term interests of the planet.
"We need an economy that respects the limits of the environment. We need an economy that serves all people's needs. We need an energy-efficient, better way of living -- walkable, integrated communities. We need to start seeing how all the different issues are really interconnected and address the underlying causes of poverty, environmental degradation, sprawl, traffic, health- care, and education."
