Ken Bell’s involvement in environmental initiatives makes him an exceptionally qualified Issue Advocate for Agriculture and Food for the Green Party of Ontario. In 2004, he developed a program to replace the use of aquatic herbicides in Rondeau Bay with an environmentally friendly Aquatic Harvester. Working with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Rondeau Provincial Park, the Caldwell First Nations and other stakeholders, he secured funding, educated local residents, established political will, acquired the necessary permits, hired the various contractors and organized the cutting and dumping operation.
As water quality monitoring coordinator for the Rondeau Watershed Coalition, Ken has developed a sampling and testing procedure within the Rondeau Watershed. As guest lecturer in the Environmental Management Degree program of the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Agricultural College, he has developed a series of labs that introduce students to Rapid Bio-assessment Protocols. With an emphasis on ecology, he teaches about the specific relationships between populations, resources and environmental conditions and how food webs can change as a result of environmental mismanagement.
Ken has been a member of various environmentally based NGOs and organizations, including the environmental strategic planning committee for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. He is the owner/operator of a small construction/renovation business, and an avid sea-kayaker.
