Ted Shelegy
18.09.2007 - 13:10
Ted Shelegy was born on a small dairy farm in 1941 near Scotland, Ont. He graduated from the Ontario College of Agriculture and later the University of Guelph. The father of three taught Science, Physics, Biology and Agriculture at Waterford District High School, Pauline Johnson Collegiate, and Simcoe Composite School, while still finding time to farm — growing organic crops for the last 14 years.
Ted is a former Director of the Brant County Federation of Agriculture, the Society for Biodynamic Farming and Gardening in Ontario, and the OntarBio Organic Farmers Cooperative (now called Organic Meadow Cooperative) in Guelph. He serves as Director of the Norfolk Local of the National Farmer’s Union, as Chair of the Organic Grain Pool within Organic Meadow Cooperative, and as a Facilitator for Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (teaching farmers about the transition to organic).
Ted’s involvement in the community extends far beyond agriculture. He served as a Burford Township Councillor, chairing the Rural Community Development Project, and volunteers as a weather observer for the federal Environmental Meteorological Service. He is a member of Sustainable Brant, the Knights of Columbus and the Optimist Club, and a former member of the Brantford Flying Club.
