Response to Throne Speech from Mike Schreiner, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario
08.03.2010 - 14:55
After giving a multinational corporation—Samsung--preferential access to the Ontario grid in a backroom deal at the expense of local green energy projects, handing out sole sourced contracts to high paid consultants at eHealth, and turning over control of sales tax policy to the federal government in a closed door HST deal with Jim Flaherty, I question how open the McGuinty door is and for whom.
The door seems closed to citizens, communities, small businesses and family farms.
The Green Party of Ontario has a clear and compelling vision for Ontario to build a prosperous green economy that fosters strong communities and promotes the health and well being of all Ontarians. The Green plan begins with policies and programs that are fair, transparent and consistent for all.
Since efficiency is key to building prosperity in the 21st century, the GPO would make a comprehensive Green Building Program a top priority so that we can create jobs today that save us money by reducing energy demand. The GPO would invest in upgrading training programs to insure a work force with the skills to seize this opportunity.
The GPO’s priority is to open the door for communities, independent businesses and family farms through tax and regulatory reforms that support resilient local economies.
Greens believe that the best way to get health care costs under control is by investments in preventing illness in the first place. I’m concerned that there was no mention of health promotion in the Throne speech.
Greens will hold the government to account in ensuring that opportunities in the clean water sector are focused on supporting our home grown enterprises, rather than closed door deals with multinational corporations.
Mike Schreiner, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario, is available for comment.
