Reducing gridlock saves time and money

Inefficient transportation systems are a drain on Ontario’s economy. Traffic congestion costs our economy billions in lost productivity and accounts for 33% of Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions. Traffic is also a large contributor to air pollution.

Last week, the province of Ontario unveiled a 10-year infrastructure plan that calls for more spending for highways. This is another example of the Liberal government continuing to move Ontario in the wrong direction.

Our roads are important for businesses and communities, so it’s essential to keep them in good repair. What we need is more balance -  a continued focus on road systems for transportation has costs both in terms of long term climate impacts and lost productivity.

The plan perpetuates inefficiency. We know first-hand that global energy prices are rising. Wasteful investments in highway systems will continue to leave the province's economy at the mercy of fluctuating global oil markets. Following this plan means we will miss an opportunity to drive Ontario toward a truly sustainable transportation network.

Green MPPs will focus on transportation plans that strengthen our local economies and communities. We will focus on investments that lower stress on our infrastructure, save us money and improve quality of life. We will prioritize livable communities, local economies and energy efficiency.

Smart land use planning and strategic investments in efficient transportation systems can decrease gridlock, save everyone time and money, and reduce fuel consumption and pollution.

It’s time for Ontario to begin showing a real dedication to active transportation, local and regional transit, and liveable communities. Small businesses and main streets will thrive.
