AGM12P14 - Mandatory Voting

Resolution Submitter:
Pam Hickman
Resolution Type:
Policy

WHEREAS The Green Party advocates for full participation in the democratic process; and

WHEREAS In Canada voter turnout has been about 60 per cent or less in recent elections, falling to 49% in Ontario in 2011; and

WHEREAS increased voter turnout would provide election outcomes that more accurately represent the will of the electorate

WHEREAS countries such as Australia, Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, and Luxembourg have seen more between 80 and 90 per cent voter turnout since making mandatory voting law in their respective countries

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Green Party would make voting in Provincial Elections mandatory for all electors

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that offenders will not be asked to qualify why they did not participate in the election, but shall receive a demand to pay a small fine such as $20 in the mail.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the law would allow for exemptions for those who could show they had good reason to abstain from casting a ballot.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a "None of the above" option be added to ballots to allow election results to distinguish between incorrectly marked/spoiled ballots and explicit rejection of available ballot candidates.
